Heimdall was based on Shangri-La Heavy Cruiser, it is heavily modified variant. Heimdall was missile cruiser designed for large swarm attacks, overhelming enemy with share numbers of missiles fired in single volley. It is designed to operated in groups brining maximal firepower to enemy and was mostly stationed behind main line of allied ships for protection, since as ship fired all of its missiles it require time for all missiles to be loaded into their launchers (no matter that it is automated it takes time).

Since Heimdall is based on Shangri-La it posses many technologies originally developed for Shangri La. Armor and shields were the same, engines were changed and were upgraded variant of ones that were installed on Shangri. Because of automatization ship requires less crew.

Heimdall was not numerous as Shangri-La since construction is slow (main reason is that Alliance focusing on ships that were cheaper. Missile ships were extremlley effective but expensive. While Heimdall carriers only two type of missiles, it is also possible to fire any other missile type that Alliance have, even torpedo launchers were installed but were used only if needed.

One of important things is, that with new (upgraded actually) engine, Heimdall is more manuverable then Shangri. Allowing it to fire and escape quicker then its predcesors.
